What's inside
What's in a matcha tea set
A traditional Japanese matcha set is a small kit of tools, each with a job. Our three-piece Starter Set has the essentials. Our six-piece Tea Set adds the whisk holder and sifter for longer-lasting tools and a smoother bowl.
Chawan cha-wan
A wide-mouthed bowl, glass or ceramic. The working surface. Wide enough to whisk freely, deep enough to drink from. Included in both sets.
Chasen cha-sen
A hand-cut bamboo whisk with around 80 prongs. Aerates matcha into a smooth crema on top. The most important tool in the set. Included in both sets.
Naoshi na-o-shi
A ceramic whisk holder. Reshapes the chasen as it dries so the prongs stay separated and the whisk lasts longer. The single biggest thing you can do to extend whisk life. Included in the six-piece Tea Set.
Chashaku cha-shaku
A long, straight bamboo handle with a slight curve at the tip. One full scoop is roughly 1 gram of matcha, the traditional serve. Better than a metal spoon for fine powder. Included in the six-piece Tea Set.
Furui fu-ru-i
A fine-mesh sifter with a handle. Breaks up clumps before whisking for a lump-free bowl. Optional but recommended. Included in the six-piece Tea Set.
Matcha
JAS-certified organic, single-origin Kyushu. Ceremonial sets ship with single-cultivar Okumidori. Everyday sets ship with our three-cultivar blend. Included in both sets.

How to use your set
Whisk matcha in four steps
Once you have a bowl, whisk, scoop and matcha, the method is simple. No special skill needed.
Step 01
Sift
Add about 1 gram of matcha (a small scoop) into the bowl. Sift through a fine mesh to break up any clumps.
Step 02
Pour
Add 60 ml of hot water at around 80°C. Not boiling. Boiling water makes matcha bitter.
Step 03
Whisk
Whisk briskly in an M or W motion for 15 to 20 seconds. Aim for a fine, smooth crema on top.
Step 04
Drink
Drink straight from the chawan. For a latte, top with warm milk after whisking the concentrate.
The matcha inside
Ceremonial or Everyday matcha?
Every Sipspa set ships with one of our two grades. Both are JAS-certified organic, single-origin Kyushu. The difference is the cultivar and what they are made for.
Ceremonial is single-cultivar Okumidori, first harvest. Smooth, sweet, light-bodied. Made for whisking with water or soft lattes.
Everyday is a three-cultivar blend (Yutakamidori, Yabukita, Asanoka). Bold and full-bodied. Made for lattes, iced matcha and baking.

Frequently asked questions
Buying a matcha tea set
What's in a Sipspa matcha tea set?
The three-piece Starter Set includes a chawan (matcha bowl), a chasen (bamboo whisk) and a pouch of JAS-certified organic matcha. The six-piece Tea Set adds a chashaku (bamboo scoop), a naoshi (ceramic whisk holder) and a furui (fine-mesh sifter).
Which matcha set is best for beginners?
The Starter Set is the simplest way in. It has the four essentials and a 30g or 50g pouch, which is enough for around two to three weeks of daily whisking. The full Tea Set is a better fit if you already drink matcha or if it is a gift you want to feel substantial.
Glass or ceramic bowl: which should I pick?
Both bowls are wide-mouthed and made for whisking. Glass is modern, light, and lets you see the whisk crema form. White ceramic is the traditional finish and shows the matcha green vividly. There is no functional difference. Pick by aesthetic.
Is the matcha in the set organic?
Yes. Every Sipspa set ships with our JAS-certified organic matcha. JAS is the Japanese Agricultural Standard, one of the strictest organic certifications in the world. Less than 5% of Japanese tea farms meet it. The matcha is single-origin from Kyushu and lab tested before it leaves Japan.
Is a matcha set a good gift?
It works as a gift because it is a complete kit. The recipient does not need to buy anything else to start. For someone new to matcha, the three-piece Starter is the easiest entry. For an existing drinker, the six-piece Tea Set is the upgrade.
How long does the matcha in the set last?
A 30g Ceremonial pouch yields around 30 servings. A 50g Everyday pouch yields around 40 servings. A 100g pouch yields around 100 servings. Stored sealed and cold, matcha keeps its colour and aroma for four to six weeks after opening.
Do you ship matcha sets Australia-wide?
Yes. We ship to every Australian state and territory from Sydney. Standard delivery is two to five business days. Express is available at checkout. Orders over $80 ship free.
How do I care for the bamboo whisk?
Rinse the chasen in warm water after each use, never with soap. Reshape the prongs on a naoshi (whisk holder) and let it air-dry prong-side up. A well-cared-for chasen lasts three to six months of daily use. Plan to replace it eventually. It is a consumable.
