What is matcha tea?

Matcha tea is a type of powdered green tea that originated in Japan. It is made from shade-grown tea leaves that are ground into a fine powder, giving it a vibrant green colour and a distinct flavour. The tea is traditionally prepared by whisking the powder with hot water in a bowl until it becomes frothy. Matcha is popular for its high concentration of antioxidants and caffeine, which provides a sustained energy boost.

What's the difference between matcha and green tea?

Matcha and green tea come from the same plant, Camellia sinensis, but they are processed and prepared differently, resulting in different flavor profiles and health benefits. While both teas are high in antioxidants, matcha is more concentrated due to the fact that it is made from whole tea leaves that have been ground into a powder. In contrast, green tea is made by steeping the leaves in hot water and then discarding them. Additionally, matcha contains more caffeine than green tea, as it is consumed in its entirety.

The key differences 🌿

  • Matcha and green tea come from the same plant, but they are processed and prepared differently.
  • Matcha is made from whole tea leaves that have been ground into a powder, while green tea is made by steeping the leaves in hot water and then discarding them.

Antioxidant Champion

Matcha tea stands out for its remarkable antioxidant content, particularly catechins like EGCG, which help combat cancer. With significantly more catechins than other green teas, matcha safeguards cells from free radical damage, lowering the risk of chronic ailments.

Metabolism Booster & Weight Loss Aid

Matcha tea's thermogenic properties stimulate metabolism and fat burning. Studies show that matcha can raise thermogenesis (fat oxidation) from the usual 8-10% to 35-43%, making it a helpful companion for weight loss and management.

Cognitive Function Enhancer

Matcha tea uniquely combines caffeine and L-theanine, resulting in improved alertness, focus, and memory. Matcha provides a gradual energy release, avoiding coffee's jittery side effects. Additionally, L-theanine offers calming effects, perfect for mindfulness and meditation.

Heart Health Promoter

Drinking matcha tea regularly correlates with decreased heart disease and stroke risks. Research indicates that green tea consumers have a 31% lower risk of cardiovascular disease-related mortality, thanks to matcha's antioxidants that help lower bad cholesterol and blood pressure.

Immune System Supporter

Matcha tea offers essential vitamins and minerals, like vitamin C, selenium, chromium, zinc, and magnesium. These nutrients fortify the immune system and overall health. Moreover, matcha's EGCG displays antibacterial and antiviral properties, enhancing our body's defenses.

Healthy Skin Advocate

Matcha tea benefits both internal health and skin appearance. Its rich antioxidant content shields skin from free radicals, preventing premature aging. Studies reveal that green tea catechins, like those in matcha, reduce inflammation and redness, leading to a rejuvenated complexion.
